Pros & Cons

  • The culture as it is a dynamic, innovative and great place to work! Another bonus is that the firm is very accommodating with study leave, which you are encouraged to take.
  • Very collegiate environment with most of the team coming in everyday - encourages graduates to attend and be immersed in the workplace environment
  • Great culture, flexible work arrangements, lots of support for graduates and good remuneration.
  • Everyone is extremely friendly and approachable. Making learning easy.
  • Perhaps the pay prospects are slightly lower than other firms, however, well worth the sacrifice in light of the other benefits
  • Work fluctuation
  • Being a larger firm, workflow can be up and down depending on heavily on how the market is operating
  • It is a large corporation, which has disadvantages in itself. You don't know everyone that you work with.

Career Prospects
Performance reviews are conducted annually, and I believe it is possible to be promoted after a combination of years of experience and merit. After a year of being a graduate, you become a lawyer, and then there are possibilities of being promoted to senior associate, special counsel, and partner.

Corporate Social Responsibility
The firm is committed to many corporate social responsibility causes, particularly in relation to equity, diversity, justice and environmental issues. I have personally helped with some of the pro bono work that the firm does for refugees seeking asylum in Australia.

Pay is quite generous, considering the firm also pays for our College of Law fees. The firm's policy is that bonuses are not given except in very exceptional circumstances, which helps to foster a culture of collegiality and supportiveness.

Training

Training
Informal training (i.e. learning on the job) works well - learning from more senior staff and doing actual work. Team-specific formal training is being developed to share knowledge and know-how between team members.

38 hours a week - very flexible (can start early, finish early) - start anywhere between 8-9 and as long as you work the hours, you are free to leave - no expectation to stay unreasonable hours at work when you have nothing to do just to appear diligent
