Pros & Cons

  • The best aspect of working at Sims Metal is the opportunity to be part of a well- established and environmentally responsible company. Sims Metal values sustainability, innovation, and employee development, providing a positive work environment and a sense of contributing to a greener future utilising the most optimised engineering processes available
  • The most enjoyable experience about working for Sims Metal is the positive work environment that surrounds all aspects of the business. I find everyone incredibly supportive of each other and generally happy to be at work.
  • The environment is great, and there are plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. There is a lot of support.
  • You are able to be exposed to so many aspects of engineering in business, from designing and installing machinery to operating and maintaining it.
  • It is particularly satisfying to know that the job I am doing is environmentally friendly, and it gives me a sense of fulfillment to be a part of such an endeavor.
  • Not so much the 'worst' thing, but I would love to see a more diverse range of people working on site. All office and admin rolls appear to be diverse; however, yard roles tend to be dominated by men. I understand this is primarily due to the nature of the work and that it can be hard to diversify when the industry is so male-dominated. I think that there is potential for a few changes to be made to make a more welcoming space for women to want to apply for yard positions. I have noticed that there has been effort toward this, and I greatly appreciate that. I look forward to seeing how Sims adapts and grows further in the future.
  • So many challenges in all aspects, especially planning and organizing.
  • Reporting processes can be challenging during report periods e.g. EOM and EOFY
  • Nothing comes to mind.
  • There isn't anything I can think of.

Career Prospects
I believe that the promotion opportunities at Sims Metal are excellent. Following the graduate rotations, individuals have the flexibility to identify and focus on areas of work they find most enjoyable. Expressing personal preferences and concerns is encouraged, and the company is open to adjusting positions accordingly. This adaptability is particularly advantageous, as it allows employees to develop specific skills with the company's support. In terms of promotions, they are typically contingent on one's performance in their current role and the availability of positions within the company. The organization actively supports employees in taking initiative, enhancing their skill sets, and actively seeking feedback as part of their career advancement journey.

In my present role as a yard supervisor, I leverage my engineering background to focus on optimizing metal recycling machinery. This includes fine-tuning machine settings to enhance efficiency and minimize downtime. I also analyze factors like mechanical breakdowns and maintenance scheduling, as they significantly influence production. Through careful analysis, I make data-driven decisions to enhance machine performance and meet production targets.
