Pros & Cons

  • The fact that the Agency is small means that the culture is close knit and, you feel supported. Additionally, WHS is an incredibly important area of law relevant to all workplaces across the country and you'll have the opportunity to contribute to impactful work - especially in the context of emerging working arrangements, rising rates of psychological injuries.
  • Ability to pursue learning and development opportunities.
  • The friendly and supportive work environment
  • Everyone is very friendly and approachable.
  • I have enjoyed the opportunities at my workplace, as well as the supportive and respectful work culture. All of the supervisors I have had during my graduate rotation have been supportive to work with, along with the different teams I have been part of. I also enjoy the engagement with other staff at the agency due to social club activities, as well as the promotion of inclusivity and diversity through WIN networks.
  • As it's a small Agency, you are really able to collaborate and understand the functions of other teams. You also get plenty of hands on work and support from all areas. The work is interesting, and forces you to think about directions and perspectives you haven't before. There is also plenty of opportunity for problem solving and thinking outside of the box - and it's an open environment to air any ideas you have.
  • At times, the work is fast-paced while at other times projects can take longer to progress.
  • There are also very limited travel opportunities too due to the nature of the work.
  • Decisions are made by SWA Members, you don't really get that direct engagement or direction by a Minister, so the arrangement may feel different to APS staff who are more familiar with that arrangement.

Culture
The culture in my team is collaborative. We are assigned to work on certain topics with different members of the team, to encourage different team members to work together and to share the workload among team members. My team is supportive, and I feel confident I can seek assistance and ask questions of any members of my team, including director and branch manager.

Diversity
The Agency has policies in place to create a safe environment for a diverse range of people. If you wish, you can join the Workplace Inclusion Network which is an employee-led forum that champions diversity and inclusion in the way we work, so that every employee is able to bring their true and whole selves to work. They will host events throughout the year encouraging inclusion, including presentations, inclusivity training and acknowledgement of awareness days. Flexitime makes it easy to arrange work with any caring responsibilities The office also has an accredited breast-feeding room for those who require it

Yes, I am very satisfied with management at SWA. In my current team, internal communication is effective both ways, and they are accessible and make good mentors.

Office Work Environment
Nishi Building in Canberra is very nice. It has views overlooking the lake, and you can see Parliament House and the Library. It has 4 kitchens, very specious work pods, sit-to-stand work stations, lovely bathrooms and shower facilities. The office is 15 minutes from the tram or about 10-12 minutes from the nearest bus line. There are a few cafes around, and Palace Electric Cinemas is downstairs for easy screening. Dress code is smart casual/professional, however, dress code can differ between teams. We have casual Fridays.

Recruitment

Recruitment
The interview process was accessible and straightforward. I submitted my application with a cover letter and resume directly to SWA. I was then contacted to proceed to next stages, which involved a written response (my response to a prompt question); virtual response interview (where I recorded my answers to three questions); group interview (where a group of applicants worked together to solve a problem) and panel interview. I found this process to be encouraging to applicants.

Training
We are encouraged to attend training and development sessions and fully use our $1,500 learning and development budget. I have attended a number of sessions (including free sessions) during the year which I have benefitted from. These skills include communication, procurement, statutory interpretation and graduate-specific training.

I generally work 7.5 hours a day, and I can accrue flex if I need to work further. My work is supportive if you need to leave work early or start work early, as long as you speak with your supervisor beforehand.
