Pros & Cons

  • Flexibility with working conditions. Can have a mix between remote and in office development. Small teams allow for close co-ordination with seniors on a daily basis.
  • The culture at Northrop is the best I have seen at a company, and this is directly due to the people. It is an extremely welcoming and enjoyable place to be, and as an undergrad, it is invaluable to have people around you that are happy to help as you develop.
  • The company is very committed to climate commitments and they walk the talk. Culture wise, my colleagues are very helpful and supportive, not to mention my manager always gives me the platform and opportunity to realise my fullest potential.
  • We work on local projects that you can see and can feel the impact it has on the community. I love that the company is very technical and the knowledge and experience is really great to back up the engineering design and to see why things are done as they are. The people also make its great environment to come to every day - they are all friendly and supportive.
  • Northrop places genuine emphasis on supporting employees to drive innovative initiatives within its sectors & encourages a dynamic inclusive environment
  • Streamlined into a certain facet of the business. I.E, may be part of services and design and not get very much experience in construction because the teams are divided this way
  • The workload might get overwhelming sometimes, but it is still manageable.
  • Separation of different engineering teams causing a small degree of isolation between teams.
  • The lack of processes can be frustrating at times, however it does enable free-flowing progression, which is also a plus!
  • There could be more technical aspects to the work.
  • The workload can sometimes be too large.

Northrop places a lot of importance on sustainability and inclusion. In my brief time at the company so far I have already participated in several company conferences on sustainable design and watched a presentation from an indigenous artist during NAIDOC week.

Culture
I feel as though it is a very level playing field at Northrop - everyone treats you with the same respect, whether you are a undergrad or a principle (owner) this makes everyone extremely approachable when asking for help

Diversity

Diversity
The company systemically promotes flexibility and inclusion, allowing remote work (depending on the context) to retain quality employees, WFH arrangements and reduced workload for parents to name a few benefits. This means I work with a great bunch of people from diverse backgrounds!

Satisfaction
I work under supervision of well experienced mentors and team members who are ready to provide support with a just a tap on the shoulder. I'm expected being trained on how to act as a professional. I'm always enough to take on a different roles from design to site inspections.

Office Work Environment
Very modern and semi open plan. There are quiet area and meeting rooms to escape to if need be. There are kitchenettes and coffee facilities as well. Dress code is good casual, some engineers dress up more formally, other down and keep it casual

Recruitment

Recruitment
The interview process consisted of a first and second interview with senior members of staff. The interviews involved a range of technical and teamwork based questions and scenarios that required problem solving. There was also opportunity for me to talk about my interests and also to ask questions about the company and the work that is done.

Salary
My salary is appropriate for a graduate engineer with no experience. Job comes with super and leave loading. Northrop does pay overtime which helps increase this

Training
Northrop has a great interest with further developing the skills and expertise of their employees. Personally I feel this is the most valuable thing that Northrop has to offer over other consultant engineering firms

Work Hours

Work Hours
I work 7.5 hours a day which is manageable. I haven't required much flexibility in hours but from what I've seen with other co-workers the company is very accommodation for people who need to work flexible hours.
