Shaila Rutnam

I love my team and I am grateful to them because I had to learn how to do my job entirely online. I love that the team is understanding, willing to help me with anything, understanding of the challenges that I may be facing or just willing to explain to me what the feature is so that I can do my job effectively.

What's your job about?

The company I am contracting for is Optus and I am responsible for testing activities for the My Optus App that have been developed by my team.

I am currently responsible for the initiatives that have been developed by my team. A day in the life of a tester. Will always start with a stand-up meeting with my team, if I have any features or enhancements assigned to me I will test these and write up my observations in the corresponding Jira Ticket. I will also add any screenshots required. I may need to clarify some items, this could be with a UX designer, the Product Owner, or the developer. If our feature or enhancement will be released into production I will create a Test Summary Report which includes the name/s of people who tested, the environment configuration used, the Jira tickets tested with pass/fail status and the test cases that were tested as part of these tickets. Also, we need to ensure that any defects are included.

I also need to ensure that I automate the initiatives that have already been developed and released in production. Automation work is usually done when I have time or am blocked on another testing. E.g. Environment configuration not working etc. This helps avoid manual testing.

An interesting detail is that you know what is happening at Optus before anyone else does!

What's your background?

I was born in Japan but moved to Sydney in 2005 so have attended most of my schooling and university primarily in Australia. When I graduated from University it was in July 2019 and while this was a weird time of year to graduate. I was able to apply for any entry-level or graduate role     I could find. All I knew is that it had to be in IT. When I got signed the contract for Wipro it was actually a really busy time in my personal life. I had decided to go on a holiday by myself because I had been at university for 4 years and hadn’t really taken a break since 2014! It turns out that my trip was timed at the right time as I left Sydney on Christmas Eve and didn’t return until January. I started with Wipro in February 2020 so I have been in my current job for 1.5 years.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I love my team and I am grateful to them because I had to learn how to do my job entirely online. I love that the team is understanding, willing to help me with anything, understanding of the challenges that I may be facing or just willing to explain to me what the feature is so that I can do my job effectively.

I enjoy the testing because I can notice a bug that can be fixed before being released to production or just see how the functionality works and it's amazing that I may be able to make someone’s life a little bit easier

What are the limitations of your job?

I don’t work on weekends unless asked and ensure that I log off at a reasonable hour because I believe in having a work-life balance. A limitation of my testing job would be timelines as we release an app every three weeks. I get three days to test the Front end and three days to test the backend and sometimes this is not enough because of how big the feature is. If you have high attention to detail, love finding bugs or things wrong with an app, or coding then I would say that testing is for you because at one time or another you will be doing these things.
