Johnathan Bugden

I like my job because I have a lot of agency in regards to how I perform a task, and there is a diverse mixture of different skills, allowing a lot of room to learn and grow as a developer.

What's your background?

I grew up in Caboolture, about an hour North of Brisbane. I studied at Narangba Valley High and then went on to study a Bachelor of Game Design at Griffith University at South Bank; something I wanted to do since I was young. I got my job because my lecturer walked in the room and asked who wants a job and I was one of two that were hired for my position.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

For a person to do my job, they would need training in game development software, because a lot of the tasks I perform require at least a fundamental idea of 3D modelling tools.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I like my job because I have a lot of agency in regards to how I perform a task, and there is a diverse mixture of different skills, allowing a lot of room to learn and grow as a developer. Everything from document writing, to 3D modelling practices, to programming, to dealing with map and GIS data, to version control I have had the ability to learn from.

What are the limitations of your job?

Sometimes the job can be a bit tedious. Also a lot of the programs I use are old and don’t a lot of documentation.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Do more extra-curricular stuff – don’t just learn what the course needs me to learn
  2. Learn better writing practices – more professional writing
  3. Start stuff earlier – Don’t just leave it until the last minute
