Consultant, Economic & Financial Consulting at FTI Consulting

Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Advanced Studies, Finance and Economics at University of Sydney (USYD)

I have loved learning from the wealth of my team’s knowledge – particularly with everyone coming from such diverse work experiences.

What's the best thing about your job?

I have loved learning from the wealth of my team’s knowledge – particularly with everyone coming from such diverse work experiences. Our relatively flat structure has allowed me to work closely with senior team members, including managing directors, and has made this wealth of knowledge super helpful for my learning. I have also found it to be refreshing to be part of a team where everyone clearly enjoys their jobs and has a passion for the work that they do; it creates a very uplifting work environment.

What was most challenging?

I think I found it most challenging to understand and manage my capacity, especially early on when it is difficult to gauge how long tasks will take. As a newcomer, it is tempting to say yes when offered to hop on projects or specific tasks to show eagerness. Over time, as my skills developed, I learned to better estimate how long tasks take and could more effectively communicate with project managers about my workload. I also realised that it is okay to let the team know when I do not have the capacity for a task, as ultimately, your team does not want you to be overwhelmed with work and it is better to be allocated to someone who does have the capacity.

How do you make your impact?

When I first started, FTI Consulting worked on a business case for a social housing project. This involved conducting a cost-benefit analysis that looked to quantify the benefits of the proposed project, with the intention of hopefully yielding a benefit-to-cost ratio greater than 1. I found this project to be very rewarding, being able to model benefits and how they accrue to different members of society. It was really nice to play a very small role in a project that had the potential to bring a lot of value to people’s lives.

What is the culture like at FTI?

I found FTI Consulting to be very welcoming. When I started, I had catch-ups with everyone in my team (some of them online via Teams) and also across other segments within the Sydney office. Everyone has been very willing to help in any way they can. I think initially, I felt awkward about taking people’s time, especially more senior members, but I quickly realised that everyone genuinely cares about the growth and development of more junior team members. FTI Consulting also offers a lot of fun initiatives and events to get involved in, such as the Young Professionals’ trivia night and go karting and the Women’s Initiative (FTI WIN) Mecca networking event.

What advice would you give current students interested in working for FTI Consulting?

It is definitely important to start thinking about your career whilst you are studying, consider what units you like when picking unit electives, potentially try a CBA or economic consulting unit, try out different case comps, join societies aligned with your interests and consider what types of jobs are actually out there – but it is equally important to enjoy the time for what it is. I made some of my best friends just in class at university, which made the experience so much more enjoyable and completing my degree easier as I always had reliable people I could turn to. It is also really nice when those relationships extend beyond university; then you have a group of people to move into the industry together with and have that continued support.

How has the Graduate Development Program supported you to own your career?

Being allocated a specific coach and buddy has made me feel incredibly supported. It has been really nice having dedicated people to turn to with any questions, especially those who have been in the industry for a while and have a lot of insights to share. I have monthly catch-ups with my coach to discuss my progress on goals that we have set together. We also had a 2-day induction when we first started, where all the grads were flown to the Sydney office, and it was really lovely to meet everyone and be introduced to the FTI Consulting segments.

What is the recruitment process like?

The recruitment process was relatively standard. After passing the initial CV screening, I completed an online assessment followed by a phone interview. I was then invited into the Sydney office, where I completed a 30-minute case study and a 30-minute interview. I received my offer quite soon after that.

What is something that surprised you about working in your role?

I was surprised at how much autonomy had been afforded to me, especially as a junior. I have been encouraged to speak up whenever a project piques my interest and indicate what kinds of work I like best. This has led to me having extensive exposure across the practice areas of Energy, Government, Business Economics and Regulatory – allowing me to better understand what kind of work I enjoy the most and where I can bring the most value to the team.
