About BHP

At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential. With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities. Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success. Come and be a part of this success.

About the Role

Are you ready to apply what you’re learning at university at Australia’s global resources organisation, while working in diverse teams who will support, encourage, and help you build your technical skills and experience for your future?

From our Coal Operations across Queensland to the Copper Province in South Australia and Iron Ore in Western Australia, or various office locations - the BHP Australia Intern Program could be the perfect way to begin your career journey and gain valuable experience.

As a BHP Intern, you will work with us for 10-12 weeks over the summer break and build your own professional network with a range of technical experts and graduates and experience a range of working environments.

You will gain exposure to the resources sector at an early stage of your career and attend networking events with other interns and graduates. Plus, as a successful intern, you’ll get first access to our Australian Graduate Program opportunities or be invited back for another internship if you are in the earlier years of your degree.

As our Intern opportunities for engineering and science are residentially based near our mining operations or will require you to work on a Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) roster, it is important that you are willing to consider either of these arrangements to undertake an intern role. Roles such as Technology and Finance will support our operations from our city locations, but they are never far from the action.

What we are looking for

You’ll be a student who is between their second to penultimate year and is able to work with us over the summer break in Australia at the end of 2025.

Your degree could be from one of the following (but not limited) to:

  • Engineering: Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Civil, Geotechnical, Metallurgy / Minerals Processing, Chemical, Construction, Mining, Environmental, Instrumentation Control and Automation
  • Science: Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental and Earth Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Spatial Science (Surveying), Geographical Information Systems
  • Health Science: Safety, Occupational Hygiene, Health, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Paramedical Science
  • Technology: Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Statistics, Software Engineering, Mathematics
  • Business: Accounting, Finance, Supply Chain, Logistics Management and Commerce

To be successful in our program you will be adaptable and flexible with a hunger to learn and embrace change. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, along with the ability to work effectively in a team and problem solve.

For further information on our intern program and to better prepare you for our process, we would encourage you to check out our website (https://www.bhp.com/careers/graduate-student-programs/australia) and to watch a FAQ video with some of our recent graduates to gain a better understanding of the types of opportunities ahead of you.

Please note: International students who have a valid visa with no work restrictions for the duration of the internship program are eligible to apply.
